Color Clarification

I got a lot of votes for #8891, which looks identical in the Cascade image. It's an obvious choice for most of you, but I'm worried that the color on the computer and the color in real life won't match. So I went ahead and ordered a few colors in hopes of finding a match. So until then I frog. The shop I'm ordering from online offers Priority shipping so hopefully the yarn will arrive by Tuesday and I'll take more pictures.

Until then, I have an assignment for you. Search the web for other Nintendo knitters and send me links and pictures. I want to give props to others who are combining the world of 8-bit and yarn. I've already seen a few sites floating around the web and I'll post a few tomorrow.

For tonight, here's something else geeky that lends itself to knitting: binary! I had great plans for this swatch that I made, but for some reason I stopped. All you get is the binary section, but you can see that it works similar to knitting 8-bit images. In fact, I designed this out on graph paper first with each square equally a knit stitch. I used Rowan Cotton Glace, which is a firm cotton and sometimes hard to work with, but the stitch definition is lovely.

I'll make a little prize for whoever translates this first! (That's a zero starting the last line and a one ending the row.)

"love"

Yay binary! Are you going to be doing the binary scarf?

Damn, you're quick!

I have no idea where I was going with this. I would love to make a binary scarf or hat or something wearable, but this particular yarn made my hands hurt after awhile. So maybe I'll make some washrags with this and try a scarf with a different yarn.

darn...there were no comments when I started.

anyway..."love"!

Erin, you get a prize, too!

oh by the way, email me your addresses so I can mail you something.

No lie, I didn't even look at the binary and guessed it said "love" ... dunno how, just was a hunch.

Awww man..I missed it? :-( Oh well..that's an awesome idea!

If you're on Ravelry, search for Nintendo or Mario in patterns and you'll get tons of patterns and projects. I just made a small knitted 1UP mushroom!

That's adorable, your binary scarf and what it says. I'd love to have one like it, do you have a pattern?

You asked for other pixel projects. :D

Doh! Someone beat me to the felted bag :)
I am actually planning on writing up a little article on gamer knitting and would love to include your project, if you don't mind?

it says LOVE!!!

it says LOVE!! LOVE the mario scarf by the way!

Laura, I used graph paper to make a pattern. The zeros were four squares high and three squares wide. Same with the ones. Just play around with some graph paper and an online binary translator and see what you can come up with. =D

Jadielady, I'd love to be included! Just email me if you have any questions for me.

And... felted bag? Haha, I'm confused.

i feel dumb. how does one do this binary translation?

Cassie said...

Kate- I used an online binary translator like http://www.paulschou.com/tools/xlate/.

I knew it was love before I clicked comments and have never read binary at all ever - how cool is that? Love the site, found it on Joystiq, huge props for that. God is love and love is real!

What a cool project! Geek knitting is so fun. I made myself a portal companion cube and taught myself how to knit earlier this year.

Cant wait to see it finished!

@Kate -

Convert the binary(base 2) to decimal (base 10)..

01101100 = 108
01101111 = 111
01110110 = 118
01100101 = 101

Now you have 4 decimal numbers: [108, 111, 118, 101]

These numbers correspond to characters in ASCII (http://www.asciitable.com/)

108 = l
111 = o
118 = v
101 = e

From the given binary, it spells 'love' in all lower case.

Do I get a cool price for the explanation? D;
